A Pune-based IT engineer and his wife have been defrauded of approximately ₹14 crore over a span of seven years while desperately seeking a cure for their two daughters, who have been ill since birth.

The couple returned to India after the husband worked in the UK for over a decade and settled in Pune in 2010. In 2018, they came across a so-called spiritual healer and a guru who claimed they could rid the family of negative influences (“dosh”) affecting the daughters and their properties.

Under this influence, the engineer and his wife sold their UK home, a flat in Pune and farmland in Konkan, exhausted savings and provident funds, and even took loans against relatives’ properties — all at the behest of the so-called healer. Despite transferring the money, the daughters’ conditions remained unchanged.

In early November 2025, the couple filed a complaint with the Pune city police, prompting an investigation by the Cyber and Economic Offences Wing. Authorities say the accused persons claimed spiritual powers and used emotional manipulation to extract massive sums from the family.
