Fiji won on their last visit to Twickenham in August 2023 and face England on Saturday aiming for a sixth straight victory.

England opened their autumn campaign by beating Australia 25-7, but with an eighth successive win under their belts, they may look to play more rugby against the Fijians.

Steve Borthwick’s bench made the difference in the win over the Wallabies and those reinforcements can help the Red Rose pull away in the final quarter to secure a decent victory.

England vs Fiji preview

Steve Borthwick had big problems after Fiji beat England 30-22 at Twickenham in August 2023.

There were even calls for him to be sacked just weeks out from the Rugby World Cup, but he guided the team to the semi-finals, and while results haven’t always been sparkling, he and his staff have alighted on a style that has helped the team win eight matches in a row.

They got revenge on Fiji by beating them 30-24 in the quarter-finals in France but are now a more settled and balanced side capable of moving the ball in the backs, as well as dominating opponents up front.

Fiji return to the scene of arguably their greatest ever victory, having beaten a much-changed Scotland side in July before going on to win a seventh Pacific Nations Cup title.

Fly-half Caleb Muntz gives his country’s attack shape, choosing when best to unleash the magnificent runners outside him.

Racing 92’s superstar Josua Tuisova partners with Bristol’s Kalaveti Ravouvou in the centres, while their pack is bursting with power.

England need to be patient and it is no surprise that Borthwick has stuck with a six-two bench split after it worked so well in last Saturday’s 25-7 win over Australia.

It is a cliche, and maybe at times unfair, that Fiji struggle to maintain their pace for 80 minutes.

They did in those two matches in 2023, but they had months together ahead of those fixtures and often drift through their autumn campaigns.

Bench stars can change the game

In Maro Itoje, Tom Curry and Henry Pollock, Borthwick has real game-changers to call upon and their impact could be invaluable.

Pollock is especially potent. The back-rower has scored three tries in 61 minutes of Test rugby and his celebrations and knowing glances to the camera ensure the 20-year-old is already a star.

England are a better team than in 2023. In fact, they may even back themselves against the Fijians physically.

However, the depth now available to the coach is incredible and those finishers can help the hosts pull away in the closing stages to secure a decent win at HQ.
