No. 6-ranked Monmouth football (8-1 overall, 5-0 CAA) is looking to make more history today as the Hawks aim for their first-ever win over New Hampshire (5-4, 3-2) at 12 p.m. ET at Kessler Stadium in West Long Branch, N.J.
Monmouth, led by one of the best passing games in the FCS, is gaining national attention from the playoff selection committee after earning the No. 8 ranking on Nov. 5. The Hawks have yet to lose to an FCS opponent this season and have won six straight games.
Derek Robertson is a big reason why, as he’s arguably the favorite to win the Walter Payton Award. However, Robertson missed the Hampton game with an injury and remains week to week. In his place is 6-foot-5, 215-pound redshirt freshman Frankie Weaver, who went 15-for-20 with 233 yards against Hampton.

For New Hampshire, the Wildcats are coming off their bye week after beating William & Mary on Oct. 25. They’ve won back-to-back games after facing ranked Villanova and Rhode Island teams in consecutive weeks.

In the latest AFCA poll, three CAA teams landed in the top 10, and all three likely are headed to the playoffs – Monmouth (No. 6), Villanova (No. 8) and Rhode Island (tied for 10th).
Since we last looked at the conference standings, nothing has changed. Monmouth and Rhode Island are undefeated at 5-0, with Villanova close behind at 5-1 and Maine at 4-1.
Monmouth and Villanova don’t have particularly tough matchups ahead, though Monmouth has three CAA games left, and Villanova only has two. The one thing they can’t do at this point is get complacent.
Perhaps the biggest game left on the CAA schedule is a Nov. 15 meeting between Rhode Island and Maine.

An upset by the Black Bears could mean a beeline to the solo title for Monmouth, while a URI win could lead to co-champions and some scientific calculations to determine the automatic bid, since Monmouth and Rhode Island didn’t meet this season.
Again, it looks like the CAA will be three-strong in the playoff bracket, but the only way the conference is going to match last year’s four is if things get shaken up, and Maine somehow wins the conference title. Well, MAYBE if the Black Bears win out, an at-large bid might be warranted.

Derek Robertson Not Listed As Starter On Depth Chart
Derek Robertson is not playing against Monmouth today and Frankie Weaver will get the start.
Rodney Nelson Dominating For Monmouth Football.
Sure they pile up passing yards, but the Hawks also run the football. And that’s because Rodney Nelson is having a big year. Nelson has racked up an FCS leading 1,482 yards and 15 touchdowns. Nelson broke Jaden Shirden’s record with his sixth straight game finishing over 100 rushing yards last week, as he went for 244 and two scores in the win at Bryant.
It was a career high – helping him earn CAA and National Offensive Player of the Week honors. He ranks fourth all-time at MU in rushing yards in a single season, and is on pace for the first ever 2,000-yard campaign.
UNH vs. Monmouth Is Passing Defense vs. Passing Attack
UNH has limited CAA offenses to just 172.3 yards per game, that’s second in the CAA. Monmouth, meanwhile is averaging 325.7 yards per game.
Will Monmouth Football QB Derek Robertson Play Today?
Robertson is week-to-week after an injury to his non-throwing hand and wrist. So far Monmouth has not officially ruled him out. If he’s unable to play, Frankie Weaver will likely get the start.
The New York native continues to rank among the top quarterbacks in the nation, leading the FCS in passing yardage (2,482) and touchdowns (27) while completing over 71 percent of his attempts. A member of the Walter Payton Award Watch List, he has Monmouth positioned as one of the most efficient offensive units in college football and is on pace for a career-best statistical season.

About The 2025 NCAA Division I FCS Playoffs
The 2025 FCS Playoffs will feature a 24-team bracket. The top 16 teams will be seeded, and the top eight seeds will receive first-round byes.
The rest of the field (the remaining 16 teams) will play in the first round, with the No. 9 through No. 16 expected to host, if possible. Their opponents are selected by regional proximity, if possible, to ensure the shortest trip possible for the teams.
However, the first round will try to avoid any matchups featuring conference teams that have played each other.
