Penn State sophomore, Pa. native off of Nittany Lions’ roster after coaching change

Penn State could see a mass exodus of transfer departures between now and the end of the season. That tends to happen when programs make a coaching change.

The first Nittany Lion has now made that choice.

Redshirt sophomore tight end Joey Schlaffer is no longer on the roster. The Exeter Township (Reading, Pennsylvania) product did not travel with the team to Columbus for the Ohio State loss this past weekend.

Stuck in a talented Penn State tight end room that featured Theo Johnson, Tyler Warren and Khalil Dinkins during his career, Schlaffer never broke through for consistent playing time.

He appeared in four games in 2024 and three in 2025. He made his lone career reception this year against Villanova, a 19-yard touchdown.

Schlaffer came to Happy Valley in 2023 as a four-star prospect.

The 6-5, 226-pounder should have two years of eligibility remaining at his next stop.

Penn State +15 point spread is -110 on Caesars for Saturday’s Big Ten matchup against Indiana. Our comprehensive Caesars Sportsbook review shows you how to sign up and use their app.
