Saints vs. Panthers: Score, live updates from the NFC South battle in Charlotte

The New Orleans Saints travel to take on the Carolina Panthers in an NFC South contest on noon on Sunday in Charlotte. This is the place to keep up with the score and live updates.

Tyler Shough will get his second career NFL start at quarterback for the Saints after falling on the road to the Los Angeles Rams a week ago.

This is the second NFC South game of the season for the Saints, who lost 23-3 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers two weeks ago.

Live game updates

UPDATED, 12:56 p.m.: Another three-and-out for the Saints, with a poor throw from Young to McMillan, who couldn’t bring it in under pressure from Kool-Aid McKinstrty. A better throw, though, and Kool-Aid wouldn’t have had a chance.

But the Saints are going to get it back for one of their few drives this entire season that will take place with a lead.

UPDATED, 12:50 p.m.: Touchdown Saints! It’s a 62-yard bomb from Shough to Chris Olave on third-and-8. What a throw from Shough on a deep shot after six straight runs to start the drive.

The Saints have a 10-7 lead (and they might just have a quarterback). There’s 9:21 left in the first half.

UPDATED, 12:47 p.m.: Three Alvin Kamara runs, and the Saints are just barely short of a first down. Interesting choice to run on third-and-4 there.

But Kellen Moore, after playing it conservative from the 2-yard line earlier, are going for it here. It’s Taysom Hill on the QB power, and he’s got it. Big early conversion there.

UPDATED, 12:44 p.m.: Nathan Shepherd gets an ankle pick, wrestling style, on Bryce Young as he drops back, and it’s a big loss and a three-and-out for the Saints defense. Great play by Shepherd for the sack.

Saints take over in much better field position at their 24 early in the second quarter.

UPDATED, 12:35 p.m.: We’ve reached the end of the first quarter: Panthers 7, Saints 3.

New Orleans will have to punt out of its own end zone when the second quarter begins. Shough narrowly avoided a safety by getting the ball away on third down.

Replay of that punt shows that that was just an impossible bounce for Martin and the Panthers. They certainly had some fortunate breaks in this first quarter, but that’s kind of how it’s going for the Saints.

UPDATED, 12:31 p.m.: It’s going to be a long day if the Saints can’t stop the run. They actually did a decent job on the opening drive until the end, but here they let Dowdle rumble up the middle for 14 yards on the first play.

But the Saints do stuff a couple of runs and then bat down another Young pass to get off the field. And this time, there are no flags.

They do, however, have to deal with an absolutely perfect punt from Sam Martin, who got that thing to bounce out of bounds at the 2-yard line.

So a long way to go for the Saints, trailing 7-3.

And the Saints will settle for the field goal from the 2-yard line after three straight plays that go nowhere. Offense can’t finish a promising drive.

(Also, there’s an argument to be made that a 1-8 team should have gone for it there, but alas)

UPDATED, 12:25 p.m.: Saints get down to the 2-yard line and then get pushed back. They settle for a 20-yard field goal from Blake Grupe and cut the Panthers’ lead to 7-3.

It was first-and-goal from the 2, but then two run stuffs and an incompletion mean it’s another red-zone failure for New Orleans. Very conservative for Kellen Moore to take the field goal there, although with the way the first three plays went, I’m not sure I blame him.

UPDATED, 12:21 p.m.: Tyler Shough makes a big play on third down on the Saints’ first series. It looked like he was about to take a second straight sack, but he stays upright, steps up through the pressure and floats a pass to a wide-open Juwan Johnson, who then rumbles across midfield and all the way down to the Carolina 30. That was a gain of 52 yards.

Devin Neal pops for 14 on the next play, and the Saints are in business.

Wow. Demario Davis with a beautiful INT of Bryce Young and it’s negated by a roughing the passer penalty on Justin Reid. Panthers get a first down at the Sains’ 15. Brutal turn of events for the Saints.

UPDATED, 12:14 p.m.: Touchdown Panthers. Dowdle takes it in from 5 yards out.

What a frustrating drive for the Saints, who had two critical penalties, one that wiped out an interception, and instead fall behind yet again. That was a 12-play drive for Carolina, and they’ve taken up nearly half of the first quarter and lead 7-0 before the Saints have even touched the ball.

UPDATED, 12:12 p.m.: Saints unlucky not to get an interception off of a ball batted up in the air off of Jonathan Bullard’s helmet, but it falls harmlessly incomplete.

It does set up third-and-9, and this one is picked off! Demario Davis does the honors.

There is a flag down … oh my goodness. Roughing the passer on Justin Reid wipes it out. The Saints just make losing football plays (although I will say that’s a really, really ticky-tack call. Reid scraped Young’s face mask, and they’re going to call that.)

So instead of the interception, it’s a trip to the red zone for Carolina.

UPDATED, 12:08 p.m.: Young gets the Saints to jump with a hard count on third-and-8. It was Bryan Bresee, and it was close, but it wipes out a Carolina incompletion and a Saints stop.

On third-and-3, Young fakes the handoff to Dowdle and has an easy first down. A critical mistake on the offside penalty, and the Panthers keep marching.

UPDATED, 12:05 p.m.: A good kickoff return for Chuba Hubbard, who was the starting running back before Dowdle took over.

Now Bryce Young, the quarterback for whom Carolina mortgaged its future a couple of years ago, trading a whole bunch of draft capital for the No. 1 pick in 2023. It hasn’t worked out great, although he’s been good enough to lead the Panthers to a 5-4 record this season.

He’s off to a good start here, too, with a completion to Tet McMillan for 7, followed by a Dowdle run for 3 and a first down out past the Carolina 40.

Pregame updates

UPDATED, 12:01 p.m.: Saints out for the coin toss wearing their color rush jerseys with the sharp white helmets. They win the toss again — and this time they defer! That’s a change from the previous two weeks.

So it’ll be Bryce Young, Rico Dowdle and the Panthers offense against the Saints D first. We’re ready for Week 10.

UPDATED, 11:35 a.m.: Things I’m looking for today include:

• How can this Saints defense stop resurgent Rico Dowdle and the Panthers’ rushing attack?

• Will the Saints take the ball first AGAIN if they win the toss, and if they do, can they finally find a way to start fast?

• How does the New Orleans passing attack look without Rashid Shaheed? Does Devaughn Vele get involved at long last?

UPDATED, 10:58 a.m.: We’re a little more than an hour away from the New Orleans Saints’ second divisional game of the season, this one against the streaking Carolina Panthers in Charlotte, North Carolina.

It will also be Tyler Shough’s second career start and, the Saints hope, his best chance at victory after a drubbing at the hands of the Los Angeles Rams last Sunday.

The Saints are 5½-point underdogs in this one, as well, but that point spread is a lot less than it was a week ago.

The inactive reports are out. No surprises here, with both teams getting a key player they had an in-practice injury scare during the week — defensive tackle Bryan Bresee for the Saints, rookie receiver Tet McMillan for the Panthers.

Weather likely won’t be a factor, with a high temperature of 73 degrees and winds in the 10 mph range.
