A tailgate love story in South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – Before every Notre Dame game there is tailgating; and there’s always great stories to be told.

Chief Photojournalist Don Schoenfeld not only found a story with a Navy connection, but also a love connection.

“Met about four years through Facebook,” said Mike Robinson.

“Notre Dame Facebook page,” said Erica Donati.

“I dressed up in some kind of suit and put it on the Facebook page and she commented on it,” Robinson said. “I just clicked on her page to kind of see who she was and asked her a question because she is from Memphis, Tennessee, and my question was why are you a Notre Dame fan. Went from there and four years later, here we are, season ticket holders.”

“Season ticket holders and tailgaters,” Donati added.

“Tailgaters at 7:30, 8 o’clock in the morning from Fort Wayne and Memphis, Tennessee,” Robinson said.

“I cook too much and, he packs too much,” Donati said. “My grandfather, Pete Kehoe, was from Boston, and he was accepted into Notre Dame. But it was during the war, and he went into the Navy instead. And my mom is from Boston, and she came to Tennessee and met my dad. And that’s how are Notre Dame. We’ve been fanatics my whole life. We love Notre Dame. I’ve never been to a Navy-Notre Dame game.”

“I’ve never been… they don’t play at home a lot,” Robinson said.

“It’s exciting for me, it would’ve been one of his favorite games,” Donati said.

A lot of history and tradition in the Notre Dame-Navy game.
