Reflecting on Erich Sailer’s Influence
In the latest episode of the preseason series, hosts Alan Rigg and Matt Garcka welcomed 82-time World Cup winner Lindsey Vonn to the Skiing is Believing podcast.
To begin, the conversation turned to the lasting impact that legendary coach Erich Sailer had on Vonn’s career and so many others. “Erich had an amazing life and legacy,” Vonn said. “I hope I can continue that, along with the other athletes he supported throughout his career.”
Empowering the Next Generation
After reflecting on her mentor’s influence, Vonn shifted to another passion — the Lindsey Vonn Foundation (LVF). She explained how the foundation has had a positive impact on many girls, particularly in the United States, since its creation in 2015. Recently, the foundation celebrated its 10th anniversary, and Vonn expressed pride in both its origins and continued success.
Comeback Strength and Olympic Ambitions
From there, the discussion moved to Vonn’s remarkable comeback last season, which culminated in the 40-year-old finishing second at her home World Cup Finals in the Sun Valley super-G. On the topic, Vonn said, “That was probably one of the best moments of my career.” She added, “It silenced the criticism I had received from some of my peers and former rivals.”
Looking ahead, the conversation also touched on the recent staff appointment of Norwegian great Aksel Lund Svindal, which adds even more intrigue to the upcoming Olympic campaign. Vonn said, “Everyone knows Aksel and the experience he brings—even to one of, if not the, most experienced racers on tour.”
Still, with success comes pressure. Vonn acknowledged that attention and expectation can be a “double-edged sword.” She believes the Sun Valley podium was both a boost and a challenge heading into the Olympic year, when competition for spots is high and experience plays a key role on a strong team.
As the conversation wrapped up, Vonn reflected on her mindset for the season ahead. Preparing for the second year of her comeback, she continues to take pride in the experience and leadership she brings to the tour and to the Stifel U.S. Ski Team. That team now blends veteran racers with emerging stars — including 22-year-old Lauren Macuga, who trains regularly with Vonn.
What’s Next for Skiing is Believing
Finally, the episode set the tone for what’s to come. This conversation kicks off a full season of interviews on the Skiing is Believing podcast. Each week, new episodes will dive deeper into World Cup stories and offer fresh insights from athletes. Matt and Alan travel to Levi, Finland, next week for coverage of the first slaloms of the season — so stay tuned for more.
