No. 3 GCU, No. 4 SJSU Advance To Semifinal Round Of The 2025 WAC Men’s Soccer Tournament

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – No. 3 Grand Canyon and No. 4 San Jose State logged a pair of shutouts on Sunday night in the opening round of the 2025 WAC Men’s Soccer Tournament at CBU Soccer Stadium. San Jose State advanced to face top-seeded California Baptist on Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. PT in the second WAC semifinal, while GCU is set to square off with No. 2 seed Utah Tech at 4 p.m. PT to kick off the semifinal round on Nov. 12.

San Jose State advanced to the semifinal round of the WAC Men’s Soccer Tournament for the third time in the last four seasons, and the seventh time overall in program history. GCU, returning to the tournament for the first time since 2022, won its first postseason contest since the fall 2021 WAC Men’s Soccer Tournament.

Grand Canyon finished the match with a 15-12 edge in total shots, though each team managed three shots on goal apiece. The contest was scoreless until Alan Hermitte redirected a pass from Charles Volcy off a GCU corner kick into the back of the net at 47:58 to give the Lopes their 1-0 lead. Utah Valley goalkeeper Kolby Sessions was called upon to make two key saves in the last 10 minutes of play to keep the Wolverines in the contest, but Utah Valley was unable to add any more shots on target in that span.

GCU goalkeeper Daniel Ibarra registered three saves for his fifth solo shutout of the season.

No. 4 San Jose State 4, No. 5 San Diego State 0 (Box Score)

As the designated home team in a California clash San Jose State opened the floodgates with four goals on 19 total shots (nine on goal), the most scored in a single WAC Tournament match since the Spartans blanked Seattle U in the 2022 event at CBU Soccer Stadium. San Jose State was also dominant in corner kicks by a 9-4 final total.

Arnold Matshazi opened the San Jose State goal account at 34:25 and later added the primary assist on a goal from Cameron Cook to give the Spartans a 2-0 advantage at 63:19. Jesper Bakli and Amir Anwary made impactful entrances as substitutes, scoring at 86:11 and 86:38, respectively, to push the final goal count to 4-0.

San Jose State goalkeeper Edgar Guerra was stellar in the victory, making five saves for his conference-high eighth solo shutout of 2025.
