Gary Lineker’s fierce dig at King Charles’ list as snub over knighthood continues

Gary Lineker likely watched on with jealousy as fellow England legend Sir David Beckham received his knighthood from King Charles. The former Match of the Day host is yet to receive the most prestigious honour from the Royal family and previously made a dig at the system’s set-up after fellow Premier League star Ian Wright received an OBE in 2023.

Wright was recognised for his services to football and charity, and Lineker was on hand to congratulate his old friend. He said: “Congratulations @IanWright0 on your thoroughly deserved OBE. Sometimes the honours system gets it right.” This sneaky dig caught the attention of Lineker’s social media followers, who were quick to comment on the honours system themselves.

One wrote: “Those that grant them are still very sniffy about football. Very few knighthoods given, not even for Greavsie when everyone knew he didn’t have long left. Very poor. Compare to cricket with KBEs for Strauss and Cook very quickly after they retired.”

Another wasn’t so quick to agree, writing: “I agree for those that have done outstanding work for charities etc., but not ex-footballers etc.”

Lineker, who was awarded an OBE in 2019, continues to wait for his opportunity for a knighthood. Only 30 former footballers have been awarded a knighthood, including Kenny Dalglish, Bobby Charlton and Alex Ferguson.

Former Manchester United star Beckham became the first footballer since Dalglish to receive the honour in 2018, with ex-England boss Gareth Southgate joining the Inter Miami owner in the 2025 list.

Discussing his pride at receiving such an honour, Beckham said: “I couldn’t be prouder. People know how patriotic I am – I love my country.

“I’ve always said how important the monarchy is to my family. I’m lucky enough to have travelled around the world, and all people want to talk to me about is our monarchy. It makes me proud.”
