Morrisons to close 145 sites nationwide, including 17 daily stores and 52 cafes

Morrisons has confirmed plans to close 145 sites across the UK, including 17 Morrisons Daily convenience stores and 52 in-store cafes, as part of a major business overhaul. The supermarket chain said the move is aimed at streamlining operations and reallocating space in underperforming locations.
Most of the Daily store closures have already taken place, while additional cafes, Market Kitchens, pharmacies and florists are expected to shut before the end of the year. Chief executive Rami Baitieh said the decision was not taken lightly, but reflected the need for the company to adapt to changing market conditions.
“In most locations, the Morrisons Cafe has a bright future, but a minority have specific local challenges and in those locations, regrettably, closure and reallocation of the space is the only sensible option,” he explained. “Market Street is a beacon of differentiation for Morrisons and we remain committed to it. But as we modernise, we are making some necessary changes to the areas of the model which are simply uneconomic.
“In some stores where we are closing counters or cafes, we plan to work with third parties to provide a relevant specialist offer. Although these changes are relatively small in the context of the overall Morrisons business, we do not take lightly the disruption and uncertainty they will cause to some of our colleagues. We will, of course, take particular care to look after all of them well through the coming changes.”
MORE FOR SHOPPERS
The company had previously announced that where possible, staff affected by the closures will be offered redeployment opportunities across other parts of the business, reports the Express. Morrisons’ restructuring follows growing competition from discount retailers such as Aldi and Lidl, as well as shifting consumer habits that have seen more shoppers favour smaller convenience formats and online deliveries.
