Ontario Provincial Police are reminding drivers to drive carefully in snowy conditions and slow down and move over when they see flashing emergency lights.

This after emergency crews in Essex County were dispatched to 20 separate collisions in a five-hour period on Sunday and two Essex County OPP officers suffered minor injuries when someone struck their patrol vehicle from behind.

The incidents all occurred as snowfall moved through the area.

Nobody suffered serious injuries in any of the incidents, according to a news release issued Monday by Essex County OPP.

The officers whose vehicle was struck from behind had been providing emergency lighting at one of the collision scenes to alert motorists to slow down as multiple collisions were being investigated ahead.

Both officers were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Police are reminding drivers to adjust their mindset and driving habits for winter road conditions. Specifically, they are asking motorists to:

  • Reduce speed and drive according to the weather and visibility.
  • Increase following distance to allow extra space for braking.
  • Plan ahead and leave extra time to reach destinations safely.
  • Install winter tires and have the wheels re-torqued after approximately 100 kilometres.

Police advise people who are involved in collisions to:

  • Stay calm and check for injuries.
  • Call 911 if injured and able.
  • Contact OPP at 1-888-310-1122 if not injured and provide the location and a brief description of the incident.
  • Remain in the vehicle unless it is unsafe to do so.
