Update: CSU Fullerton Soccer Players: Community Mourns Loss of Lauren and Supports Recovery of Ashlyn

In a devastating turn of events, two members of the California State University Fullerton women’s soccer team were critically injured after being struck by a box truck while riding scooters on September 27. In response to this tragic incident, two separate GoFundMe campaigns were launched to support the families of the injured players, Lauren Turner and Ashlyn Gwynn.
Ashlyn Gwynn’s family provided an update on her condition, revealing that after spending a month in the intensive care unit (ICU), she has now been transferred to a “Step Down” unit. Here, she will receive daily scheduled occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech therapy. Her family described her recovery as “nothing short of miraculous.”
While Ashlyn continues to face a lengthy recovery process, her family reports promising signs. She is now able to communicate through nodding and mouthing words, move her arms and legs purposefully, and track moving objects with her eyes. She has also been cleared for air travel, which is necessary for her potential acceptance into TIRR Memorial Hospital’s rehabilitation program in Houston—recognized as the second-best facility in the nation for treating severe injuries like Ashlyn’s. Her family hopes this will provide her with the rehabilitation needed over the next three to four weeks, followed by outpatient rehabilitation for one to two years.
