Cade Cunningham (46 pts, 12 reb, 11 ast) led the Pistons to a 137-135 overtime victory over the Wizards, as Detroit came back from 13 down to win on Peacock.

Guard Daniss Jenkins (career-high 24 pts), a St. John’s alum on a two-way contract, hit a three-pointer at the buzzer in regulation to force the extra period.

“He’s been a dog. He’s been a guy who’s never been shy, he’s never shied away from a moment,” Jalen Duren (19 pts, 14 reb) said of Jenkins, the hero of the evening.

Cunningham also set his career high, dropping 46 points on 45 field goal attempts on a night where the Pistons were missing Tobias Harris, Caris LeVert and Ausar Thompson.

“He’s going to lead this team wherever we go,” Duren said of Cade Cunningham. “To see him fight through (a tough fall in the fourth)… gave us a huge boost.”

A wily Fox is back in San Antonio

As the Spurs pursue title contention for the first time in the Victor Wembanyama era, keep an eye on former All-Star De’Aaron Fox, who’s back to help lead the team and find the next step in his accomplished career.

Fox has developed his skill set since coming into the league from Kentucky, offering different things at different times during his progression.

He entered as a complementary distributor, peaking with 7.3 apg in his second season, then became into a scorer, delivering back-to-back seasons of 25+ ppg for Sacramento in 2022-23 and 2023-24. His three-ball has never been consistent, but has improved, as evidenced by the stepback look he takes to open the video above.

What will Fox’s role be on this young Spurs team? They have a series of talented young guards — Dylan Harper, Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell. Keldon Johnson can handle the ball and slash; veteran Jordan McLaughlin is waiting in the wings to soak up minutes.

Against the Pelicans, he played closer — a role he knows well, having earned the Kia Clutch Player of the Year award in 2023.

On Saturday, he calmly worked his way past rookie Jeremiah Fears to drop in a step-through floater, pushing the Spurs lead to five and icing a road victory.

“You’re guarding Mr. Fourth Quarter,” Spurs color commentator Sean Elliot quipped afterwards.

Fox still has his trademark speed; he’s dialed in his shooting, particularly with his floaters in the lane and free-throw line jumpers.

After shooting under 40 percent from 3-10 feet in his first three seasons, he took a jump, reaching 47 percent last year — the third-best mark of his career.

He’s also become battle-tested, having stepped up in a heavyweight seven-game series in a frenetic atmosphere for the Kings against the Warriors in the 2023 NBA Playoffs.

If he can deliver as a veteran clutch scorer for the Spurs, aiding Wembanyama’s all-around brilliance and the growing talents of his fellow guards, he’ll be a real benefit to a burgeoning contender.

Welcome to a nine-game Monday night!

Cade Cunningham and the Pistons continue their drive for seven-straight wins tonight against the Wizards.

The Pistons go for seven straight tonight on Peacock as we gear up for a nine-game night across the Association!

Cade Cunningham and Detroit broke into the top 10 of our Power Rankings for the first time today, led by a stalwart defense, which ranks third in the NBA in defensive rating at 109.5, and clutch offense.

They’re 5-1 in clutch games so far this season — tied for second-best in the league, behind the Lakers, who are 5-0 when the game’s within five points in the last five minutes.

Cunningham is a force in the pick-and-roll, methodically putting his strength, skill and intelligence to use, including in tight games. He’s running the second-most pick-and-rolls as a ball handler this season — 11.6 per game, behind Luka Dončić at 13.3 — while scoring 11.5 points in the action.

Jalen Duren has been an admirable partner for Cade, scoring 4.8 ppg off pick-and-rolls per game — second-most in the league — while controlling the game with 11.8 rpg, which is seventh-best in the Association.

They’re a bruising, physical duo, suitable for Detroit’s traditionally-tough style and late game success.

Pistons general manager Trajan Langdon has surrounded them with a variety of two-way wings, including Tobias Harris, Ausar Thompson and Ron Holland II, as well as Duncan Robinson, who can hang defensively while knocking down 40 percent of his 6.5 3PA.

They face the Wizards (7 ET, Peacock), who, while they linger near the bottom of the East, have shown flashes of real talent.

Kyshawn George, Bilal Coulibaly and Alex Sarr have all had success at times this season, particularly George, who’s nearly doubled his scoring from last year (8.7 ppg to 16.0). Former Piston Khris Middleton is also in action and always a threat. They could give Detroit problems tonight.

Beyond that, we have a clash between the 7-2 Spurs and 6-3 Bulls (8 ET, League Pass) and a standalone contest featuring the Hawks and the Clippers at 10:30 ET on NBA TV headlining the rest of the slate.

Lock in and enjoy all the action!
