‘Marty Supreme’ Second Trailer: Timothée Chalamet’s Table Tennis Prodigy Is Relentless In Pursuit Of Greatness

In the second trailer for Josh Safdie‘s highly anticipated ping pong drama Marty Supreme, audiences get a closer look at the enigmatic prodigy, played by Timothée Chalamet, and his relentless pursuit of superstardom.

Though the promo treads similar ground to the first teaser released by A24 in August, we see greater glimpses of the sprawling ensemble, from Gwyneth Paltrow — who portrays a movie star named Kay Stone with whom Marty is romantically entangled — to Tyler, The Creator (née Tyler Okonma) — who looks to be playing a close confidante of Marty’s.

Set to Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” the clip opens with Kay getting dressed in a hotel room opposite Marty, questioning the burgeoning athlete on what he does for money as he doggedly pursues his elusive athletic dreams.

“I live with the confidence that if I believe in myself, the money’ll follow,” he asserts.

And if his ambitions don’t pan out?

Marty replies: “That doesn’t even enter my consciousness.”

Elsewhere, Chalamet and Okonma’s characters try their hand at sports gambling, cleaning up cash in an amateur tournament thanks to Marty’s talents.

Set in the world of 1950s ping pong culture, Marty Supreme follows its namesake Marty Mauser, a young man with a dream no one respects, who goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness (cue: shady bags of money, explosions, gun fights and running from the cops). Though the original project is a work of fiction, the film does draw loose inspiration from the story of Marty Reisman, a New York-hailing pro player known for his showmanship and quick wit.

Rounding out the cast are I Love LA star Odessa A’zion, magician Penn Jillette, Shark Tank entrepreneur Kevin O’Leary (aka Mr. Wonderful), Fran Drescher, Sandra Bernhard and filmmaker Abel Ferrara.

Marty Supreme is slated for release in theaters on Christmas Day.
