Remembrance Day ceremonies, closures around Waterloo Region

Remembrance Day ceremonies and parades will be held across Waterloo Region on Tuesday, Nov. 11.

In Kitchener, The Royal Canadian Legion Fred Gies Branch 50 will hold a parade along King Street from Ontario Street to Frederick Street, ending at the Duke Street cenotaph. The Tuesday service officially starts at 10:45 a.m.

There will be also be an 11 a.m. Remembrance Day ceremony at the Veteran’s Green Interpretive Area, in the St. Mary’s Heritage Conservation District.

In Waterloo, the local ceremony at the Waterloo cenotaph by Waterloo City Hall will get underway at 10:30 a.m. following a parade that starts at Bridgeport Road East and Regina Street North.

And in Cambridge parades and ceremonies are being hosted by the Galt, Preston and Hespeler Legions, with road closures in place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

There are some facility closures to be aware of on Remembrance Day.

What is closed:

  • Most government, administrative offices
  • Region of Waterloo museums
  • In Kitchener, though most community centres and the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium are open, Kitchener City Hall Service Centre, Rockway Centre, and Bridgeport Community Centre are closed for the day.
  • LCBO and Beer Store locations will be closed in the morning and open at noon
  • Canada Post won’t be delivering or collecting mail
  • All major banks will be closed for in-person services but ATMs will be open

What is open:

  • Libraries
  • Warming spaces at 150 Main St. in Cambridge and 150 Frederick St. in Kitchener
  • The Region of Waterloo International Airport
  • Grand River Transit is running on a normal schedule but will pause at 11 a.m. to mark Remembrance Day. Some bus and ION routes may be detoured by the local ceremonies throughout the morning.
  • Garbage, green bin and yard waste collection will not be impacted
