Former NBA All-Star dies following battle with cancer

Former New York Knicks star Michael Ray Richardson, who was named an NBA All-Star four times during his eight-year NBA career, has died following a battle with cancer. He was 70 years old.

The Knicks announced Tuesday morning that Richardson has passed away.

“We are saddened to hear about the passing of former Knick Michael Ray Richardson,” the Knicks said in a statement. “One of the fiercest defensive players of his era, the four-time NBA All-Star made an incredible impact on the Knicks during his four seasons with the franchise.

“Our deepest condolences go to his family, friends and teammates.”

Michael Ray Richardson was drafted by the Knicks in the first round of the 1978 NBA Draft.

He played for the Knicks from 1978-82 before being traded to the Warriors.

After 33 games with Golden State he was traded to the New Jersey Nets, where he would finish his NBA career.

Richardson was banned by the NBA in 1986 for violating the league’s drug policy for the third time. He never played in the NBA again.

According to ESPN, Richardson died shortly after being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

“The basketball world and anyone Michael came in contact with lost a great sportsman,” his attorney and friend John Zelbst said, per ESPN. “He lived life to the fullest. He overcame the most incredible odds to accomplish what he did in life. He serves as an example on how to redeem yourself and make something of yourself.

“I think he is the greatest NBA player that has never been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Incredible player — player, person and family man.”

Michael Ray Richardson averaged 14.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 2.6 steals per game across his eight seasons in the NBA. He led the league in steals three times and also led the NBA in assists once.
