Eamonn Sweeney: Ireland’s under 17s in Qatar are showing how our country’s flag should be flown

Here are two pictures of Ireland. In the first, a man wearing a hood is setting fire to an Ipas centre in Drogheda. Four children are trapped upstairs by the fire. One is 12 and texts her mother, who’s working as a healthcare assistant, that the building is ablaze. Panic stricken, the woman returns home to discover that by some miracle nobody has been killed.

In the second, Rory Finneran is embracing Jaden Umeh who’s just put Ireland 1-0 up against Panama at the under 17 World Cup finals. Their teammates, Oisín McDonagh and Ade Solanke are running to join in the celebrations.
