New Luther movie greenlit at Netflix with Idris Elba returning

Even after so many years of playing John Luther across a hit BBC series and a feature film, clearly Idris Elba is not quite done as of yet.
As confirmed today over at Tudum, Netflix has officially greenlit a new feature film that will put the title character front and center once more. In addition to Elba coming back as John, you are also going to see more of Dermot Crowley as Martin Schenk and Ruth Wilson as Alice Morgan. Writer Neil Cross is back once more to pen the project. Meanwhile, Jamie Payne will once more direct.

So what is the focus of the new film? Here is what the official logline has to say about that:
When a wave of brutal, seemingly random murders hits London, Luther is secretly called back into service. But how can he save London when everyone on all sides seems to want him dead?
Meanwhile, here are what some key players had to say on the subject in a statement:
Neil Cross – “Luther, Alice, and Schenk are more than characters to me — they’re family … I never stop wondering where they are, what’s become of them … and what horrors might be stirring in the shadows of London while Luther’s not around. So we decided to get together and find out what happens next.”
Jamie Payne – “Neil has yet again created a wonderfully dark tale to bring us all back together. It’s a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with the supreme talents that are Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley … I am also thrilled to be reunited with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan, played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson. Fans new and old are in for a treat!”
It is far too early to know when the next chapter of the Luther story will be out but for us personally, we’re hoping to see it at some point either in late 2026 or early 2027.
