Tuesday’s EFL Trophy predictions

Peterborough are two from two under new boss Luke Williams and Posh’s resurgence could continue when they travel to Crawley for a key game in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night.

Staying in League One is the priority for Posh, who climbed off the foot of the third tier with a superb 5-0 victory at home to highflying AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

But they are also keen to progress in cup competitions and were deserved victors over Cardiff in the first round of the FA Cup in Williams’ first game at the helm.

Williams has quickly got the supporters onside and his in-form team should fancy their chances against Crawley in a winner-takes-all match as they aim to reach the EFL Trophy knockout rounds.

Crawley moved out of the League Two drop zone with Saturday’s 2-1 triumph at home to Fleetwood but they face a step up in class against Peterborough and may struggle.

EFL Trophy victories have been providing some light relief for League One strugglers Plymouth, who sank to the foot of the table following Saturday’s 3-1 loss at Huddersfield.

Argyle are performing way below expectations in the league but they have won at home to Cheltenham and Tottenham’s Under-21s in the Trophy and have the chance to top their group when they take on Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Ground.

Plymouth’s priority is league points but they have no match at the weekend so their short-term focus will be on trying to secure a morale-boosting win.

A strong Pilgrims side should take to the field and that may be enough to overcome Rovers in a battle between teams already assured of a place in the next stage.
