Shield nightmare as two bowlers in Australia’s 15-man Ashes squad limp off with hamstring issues

Australia’s fast-bowling stocks are starting to look a little bare, with Josh Hazlewood and Sean Abbott both leaving the field during their Sheffield Shield game on Wednesday.

The quicks went off for a medical assessment after starting day two fit, with Abbott claiming three wickets in six balls and Hazlewood bowling well for NSW.

It’s believed that both players are dealing with hamstring issues, although Cricket NSW officials have not confirmed as such according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

Hazlewood would have been an automatic selection in the XI for Australia, while the uncapped Abbott was named in the 15-man squad last week.

The 34-year-old Hazlewood missed three Tests last summer due to side strain issues.

He recently featured in the white-ball series against India.

If both players are ruled out, it would open the door for Brendan Doggett to make a shock Test debut at Optus Stadium against England.

Pat Cummins is already out of action due to a back injury for at least the first match.
