Three Short Films Premiering on BBC One NI as Part of Green Lit Initiative

Three innovative short films, part of the Green Lit initiative, will make their debut on BBC One Northern Ireland and BBC iPlayer starting November 26 at 10:40 PM. This initiative is a collaborative effort between BBC Northern Ireland and Northern Ireland Screen, designed to support emerging talent in various aspects of film production, including writing, directing, and acting.

The first film, titled Rewarding, is produced by Conker Pictures and written by Matthew McDevitt. This short features performances from Seána Kerslake and comedian Vittorio Angelone in his acting debut. The narrative centers on two co-workers, Sinead and Francis, who are thrown together during their first shift at a private domiciliary care facility in rural mid-Ulster. Sinead, portrayed by Kerslake, embodies an optimistic and idealistic outlook, while Francis, played by Angelone, is characterized by his pragmatic and cynical nature. As they work together to provide care for clients with learning difficulties and behavioral challenges, their contrasting attitudes face a significant test when a client named Cal receives troubling news on his birthday. The film offers a glimpse into the world of support workers, tinted with a touch of humor through its title, which reflects a common reaction to the challenges of their profession.

Following Rewarding, the second film Helpless, will air at 11 PM. This black comedy thriller, created by Belfast-based FABEL Productions, features a talented cast including George Robinson, Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Éanna Hardwicke, and Vanessa Ifediora. The story follows Cillian, a newly disabled wheelchair user portrayed by Robinson, who becomes increasingly obsessed with his neighbor Grace (Jackson). Cillian suspects her boyfriend Joe (Hardwicke) is abusive, but struggles to find allies, including Fleur, his personal care assistant (Ifediora), who has fallen for Joe’s charm herself. In a desperate bid to protect Grace, Cillian must confront his fears and uncover the truth behind the seemingly convoluted situation. Helpless explores profound themes such as prejudice and the complexities of love, inspired in part by co-writer Michael Patrick’s own real-life experiences.

The third film, Mourning Glory, is set to air at 11:20 PM. Created and written by Shane McNaughton and produced by Fíbín Films NI, this film stars Nigel O’Neill and Amy Huberman. It tells the story of Dermot, a widower grappling with his grief by seeking solace at random funerals, encouraged by his neighbor Jimmy. Dermot’s unusual coping mechanism leads him to crash wakes across rural County Antrim, catching the attention of a new funeral director and her young son. This warm-hearted comedy tackles themes of loss and connection, breathing life into the cultural traditions surrounding death in the Glens of Northern Ireland. The film is directed by John Carlin, with executive production from Darach Ó Tuairisg and his team.
