Why Eagles’ A.J. Brown is in the middle of more controversy — ‘Struggling brother’

Time to take A.J. Brown’s temperature again.
The unhappy reading on the Kelly green thermometer was more clear this time.
Known for his cryptic messages on social media — “using me but not using me” and “if you’re not welcomed, not listened to, quietly withdraw” among the most recent — Brown’s latest message came through the spoken word.
During an appearance Tuesday night on JankyRondo’s stream, the host asked the Eagles star wide receiver how he was doing and likely got more than he was expecting.
JankyRondo: “Everything been good? Everything been straight. Mental good? Kids good? Wife good?”
Brown: “No. Where have you been?”
JankyRondo: “You’re my dog. I still got to check on you. You know what I’m saying?”
Brown: “Yeah. Family good. Everything else, no.”
JankyRondo: “Everything going to click, everything going to click, bro.”
Brown: “It’s a sh-t show. How you been? Yeah, struggling brother.”
He later told JankyRondo, “If you got me on fantasy, get rid of me.”
Well, then.
It wasn’t a particularly good Week 10 return from a hamstring injury for Brown, who finished with two catches for 13 yards in the Eagles’ 10-7 win over the Green Bay Packers. It marked the third time in eight games that Brown had two catches or fewer for less than 15 yards.
That happened just five times in 52 games during his three previous seasons with the Eagles.
Brown is also at the center of another controversy this week.
On his third and final target from quarterback Jalen Hurts Monday night, he ran a deep route on a fourth-down play that fell incomplete. The Packers got the ball back with 27 seconds remaining at their own 36 and they got to the Eagles’ 46-yard line before Brandon McManus attempted a game-tying 64-yard field goal that was well off the mark.
After the game, DeVonta Smith said during his interview with ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt that “we’re going to ride with whatever 1 (Hurts) and 11 (Brown) want.”
A report from 97.3 The Fanatic’s Bill Colarulo said “the deep shot on fourth down at the end of the game was not the play called by (coach) Nick Sirianni and (offensive coordinator) Kevin Patullo” and that Hurts and Brown “went rogue” again. The again part refers to a 2023 play at the end of a game in Seattle that resulted in a game-clinching interception for the Seahawks. Brown later said that he and Hurts changed the play based on something they saw at the line of scrimmage.
Without getting into much detail Monday night, Sirianni defended going for it on fourth down, but he did not talk about the details of the play.
Whatever the cause of Brown’s discontent, it’s obviously something the Eagles and their receiver are going to have to deal with through the remainder of this season.
Brown was asked last week if he wanted to remain with the Eagles and his answer was this: “Have I said anything” (about not wanting to be here)?
Smith chimed in as Brown was speaking and said, “Why wouldn’t he be here?”
We’re sure to be taking Brown’s temperature again in the future, but all we can report at the moment is that the receiver remains unhappy and it still appears as if the only way to change that would be to target the star receiver more.
