England vs Serbia preview
England’s last home World Cup qualifier in September was a forgettable 2-0 victory over Andorra at Villa Park, where a first-half own goal and a Declan Rice header saw off the Pyrenean plodders.
“Have turgid England regressed under Thomas Tuchel?” asked a BBC headline while pundit Roy Keane complained: “I still think they go backwards too many times.”
A couple of months later, the mood is very different as Tuchel’s England prepare to face Serbia at Wembley.
They hammered the Serbs 5-0 in Belgrade three days after grinding out the win over Andorra, following up with a 3-0 friendly demolition of Wales and a 5-0 qualifying victory in Latvia last month.
England have cruised through Group K, winning all six of their games by an aggregate score of 18-0, and they are unlikely to ease up in their final two qualifiers against Serbia and Albania.
Tuchel has not shied away from big decisions, recalling Jordan Henderson, leaving out Trent Alexander-Arnold and overlooking Jude Bellingham for October’s internationals.
Bellingham is back this month but Elliot Anderson, Eberechi Eze and Morgan Rogers have also impressed in qualifying and youngsters Adam Wharton and Alex Scott are also in the midfield mix.
While England are planning for next summer’s tournament, Serbia are a point behind Albania in the race for a playoff spot.
Manager Dragan Stojkovic was sacked after last month’s 1-0 home defeat to Albania and former Reading boss Veljko Paunovic faces a daunting debut at Wembley.
Record goalscorer Aleksandar Mitrovic is injured as England chase a tenth victory to nil in their last 11 internationals.
Ten-man Serbia did not manage a shot on target in September’s 5-0 defeat to England, whose goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has had to make just two saves in six qualifiers, and the 3-0 home win appeals in the correct-score market.
In-form Rice underrated in goalscorer market
England midfielder Rice looks a big price to score at Wembley given that he had seven shots, three of them on target, in the reverse fixture against Serbia.
He timed his run nicely to nod in a Reece James cross against Andorra and has scored in two of his last five Premier League appearances for Arsenal.
Lukic looks a likely card candidate
Serbia’s Sasa Lukic will be suspended for Fulham’s next Premier League game against Sunderland after picking up five yellow cards in nine starts for the Cottagers this season.
Lukic, cautioned 12 times in the league last term, was the first player booked in Serbia’s home fixture against England and he may well complete the double at Wembley.
England vs Serbia Bet Builder
Declan Rice to score or assist a goal
Rice’s exquisite set-piece delivery has helped him rack up four assists, two of them against Serbia, in five World Cup qualifying starts.
Under 3.5 goals
Thomas Tuchel has vowed not to “experiment” with his team selection so England should be confident of extending their superb defensive record.
Serbia to receive most cards
Serbia have received eight yellow cards in qualifying – twice as many as England – and Nottingham Forest defender Nikola Milenkovic was shown a straight red in September’s clash.
