The following article contains spoilers from an episode of Emmerdale that hasn’t aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX.
Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) was completely shaken to discover some horrible news in the latest episode of Emmerdale.
Robert was released from prison earlier this year as a result of an appeal being a success. He was behind bars for the murder of Lee Posner, but was released because it was revealed a few years later that Lee’s brother Luke could’ve caused a brain injury prior to Robert arriving and attacking him.
He headed straight for the village upon release, determined to stop Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) from marrying John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth). This didn’t work, sparking a storyline that saw moments including John kidnapping Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb), and also throwing himself and Aaron from a cliff.
We know that prison life for Robert has had a serious impact on his mental health, but we’re yet to really learn the finite details of the time he spent behind bars.

One person who helped Robert a great deal in prison was Kev Townsend (Chris Coghill). He’s a bit weird and his temper is short, but he supported a vulnerable Robert a lot.
Kev found Robert at his home in tonight’s episode and didn’t hesitate in sharing some very important news.
We won’t reveal what it is, you’ll have to check ITVX to find out, or wait until tonight to watch it on ITV1, but the murder development left Robert on edge and emotional.

At the end of the episode, Robert told Aaron what Kev had revealed, and then confirmed he had been keeping a secret from him.
For a very long time, Robert was in prison on the Isle of Wight, but he told Aaron that during the pandemic, he got moved back to Hotten.
Aaron was taken aback. Robert sat down and said that there’s a lot Aaron still doesn’t know about his time in prison, including how he got so close to Kev, and how the man saved his life.
He took a deep breath and prepared himself, setting the scene for tomorrow’s instalment, which will solely focus on Robert’s life behind bars.

‘For us to have this flashback, it’s lovely to have that whole episode to get to tell a story, and this backstory that we got to flesh out this, there’s one particularly very nice little twist that neither of us knew about it until I read the script’, Ryan Hawley said.
‘I remember reading it like and I was like, ‘whoa’, because no one that was something that had happened, and it is massively pivotal. As far as we know, no one finds out about it so there are some interesting things that they’re sewing in this episode for things potentially leading forward.
‘So yeah, a great opportunity for me and Chris to work quite a lot together, intensively and a huge privilege, when you have that much story offered to you. So hopefully people will enjoy it, and hopefully it will be a good episode.’
