Dead Emmerdale legend stages impeccable return in early ITVX release

We couldn’t believe it! (Picture: Metro/ITV)
The following article contains spoilers from an episode of Emmerdale that hasn’t aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX.
The latest episode of Emmerdale focused solely on Robert Sugden’s (Ryan Hawley) storyline and the time he spent at Hotten prison.
A week after Robert was convicted for murder, he was transferred to a prison on the Isle of Wight, meaning visits from Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller), his beloved partner, were nigh on impossible.
Yesterday though, Robert confessed to Aaron that during the pandemic, he was sent back to Hotten prison but never told him. This was because he felt as though Aaron couldn’t move on and rebuild his life if he knew that Robert was close by.
In 2020, Aaron began a relationship with HOP worker Ben Tucker (Simon Lennon), but he was brutally murdered by Meena Jutla (Paige Sandhu). A traumatised Aaron left the village to see Adam Barton (Adam Thomas), and then spent quite a bit of time in Italy.

In 2023, Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) kidnapped Aaron from Italy after Adam told him that he had got in trouble with some criminals. At this time, Aaron was dubbed out of control, but started to change when his mum Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) was diagnosed with cancer.
It was his relationship with John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) that ultimately helped Aaron see that he could love someone other than Robert, but those feelings came flooding back when his ex was released after a successful appeal.
We learnt in today’s episode that Robert was regularly attacked while in Hotten prison, but his cellmate Kev Townsend (Chris Coghill) put a stop to it. These pals became secret lovers, but Kev’s possessiveness was then highlighted when he learnt about Robert attempting to launch an appeal.
The thought of Robert leaving him left Kev in a panic, but his dark mind led him to stabbing himself. Robert was focused on looking after Kev in the aftermath of this and due to the fact he believed his appeal probably wouldn’t work, he stopped thinking about it.

That was, until, he received a visitor.
It was at this point a huge twist aired that left us with our jaws on the floor. We’re not going to reveal what it is though – you’ll have to either check out ITVX, or wait until this evening for it to air on ITV1.
Suffice to say we absolutely didn’t expect it – but the shocking developments didn’t stop there!
Just before the episode ended, another twist was delivered involving two unlikely characters. Their paths haven’t crossed yet, but it looks like they will in the near future.
In the present day, things got even more complicated for Robert as usually squeaky clean Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) accidentally alluded to Kev that his husband has been lying to him.
Robert told Kev that he was being released from prison because Victoria Sugden (Isabel Hodgins), his sister, had a brain tumour. He lied because he didn’t want to say that he desperately wanted to reunite with Aaron.

Liam did not confirm that Robert had lied, but the look on his face was more than enough for Kev.
He wondered why on earth Robert would lie about something like that, and tried to contain his fury.
We know in upcoming episodes Kev will be seen in Woodbine with a gun in his hand. Is he going to aim it at Robert?
