Women’s Champions League predictions

Manchester United have got the league stage of the Women’s Champions League off to an encouraging start with 1-0 victories over Valerenga and Atletico Madrid, and their Old Trafford clash against Paris Saint-Germain looks another fixture where goals could be in short supply.

The pressure is on the home side after they fell to their first Women’s Super League defeat of the campaign against Aston Villa on Saturday, but they have shown they deserve to be among England’s elite as the only points they had dropped before then were against Chelsea, who have won seven of the last eight WSL crowns, and Arsenal, who captured the Champions League last term.

PSG have a European pedigree after reaching the semi-finals two years ago, but they lost both legs against Lyon and have fallen to defeat in their four subsequent games in the competition, including defeats to Wolfsburg and Real Madrid this term.

The 4-0 loss to the Germans will have been a particular concerns, but PSG will head to Manchester having kept three successive domestic clean sheets, and that suggests there may be few goals.

Six of United’s last eight games have generated no more than two goals, so the 13-10 about the home side winning a clash featuring no more than three looks an attractive price.

Bavarian battle could be another cracker

The night’s other big game between Bayern Munich and Arsenal looks set to be a much more open affair.

Bayern’s only defeat this season came in a 7-1 reverse against Barcelona and nine of their last ten games have featured at least three goals.

The Frauen Bundesliga champions reached the quarter-finals last year and were involved in a couple of cracking games against the Gunners in the group stage before the single-table system was introduced at the start of this season.

Bayern won 5-2 in Bavaria in a game where perhaps Arsenal deserved a bit more and the Londoners gained some revenge with a 3-2 win at the Emirates, courtesy of a late Mariona Caldentey penalty, before they went on the claim the trophy in Lisbon.

Another thriller looks set to be on the cards, especially as Arsenal will feel they need to attack after losing their opening game against Lyon.
