The UK is set to be covered in snow and ice as a Beast from the East-style system descends over the country, and Ireland’s weather service has updated their Irish forecasts as the extent of the freeze becomes better understood.
Following weeks of damp and turbulent weather, Met Éireann has confirmed a dramatic shift for the week spanning Monday, November 17 to Sunday, November 23.
A high pressure system forming in the Atlantic is anticipated to drive frigid air southward from the north across Ireland.
This will deliver cooler than typical temperatures, drier and more stable conditions, and reduced rainfall compared to the seasonal norm.
Meanwhile, our neighbours in England, Wales and Scotland are set to face a 10-day spell of snow with temperatures plummeting to a freezing -10C.
Jim Dale, the senior meteorologist at the British Weather Service, has warned that snow could start falling as early as this week in the higher regions of the country. He predicts that temperatures could even drop to a bone-chilling -10C.
He further added that most of the snow will fall in Scotland, with some expected to cross the border. Mr Dale stated that the bitter cold would last for about 10 days, but Brits should not anticipate snowfall on each of those days.
Speaking to the UK’s Mirror, Jim Dale, the senior meteorologist at the British Weather Services, said: “There will be some snow for the Scottish mountains from Thursday It’ll be more then – deeper and lower down for the next 10 days; accompanied eventually by hard frosts of about -5 to -10C.
“Some eventual snow infiltration further south into northern England, but that remains a watching brief for now. It won’t snow every day of the 10, nor will it be -10 every day or everywhere, but the freezer is arriving in the north.”

The Met Office has also confirmed that Brits will experience colder conditions in the more northern parts of the country from Thursday, with some overnight frost expected. In its outlook for Thursday through to Saturday, the Met Office stated: “Turning colder in the north with overnight frosts. Further spells of rain expected in southern and central areas. Strong easterly winds developing.”
The Met Office’s long-range weather forecast, which runs from Sunday through to 25 November, suggests that central and northern parts of the UK will be colder but drier with overnight frost and some showers. The Met Office stated: ” It is most likely that the bulk of the UK will experience drier and colder conditions into the first part of next week.
“Later in the period there is increasing uncertainty, but a trend towards more changeable conditions is possible, with some rain or showers in places, and perhaps some hill snow at times in the north. Temperatures overall may return to near average.”
This comes as maps from WXCharts, using Met Desk data, show temperatures dropping close to or below zero at the start of next week, then further to -7C, -3C in northern England and -2C in the south by Wednesday.
Another forecast indicates the possibility of up to 25cm of snow falling in the worst-affected areas from 19 November.
