Audi reveals ‘R26 Concept’ Formula 1 car design and targets titles by 2030

Audi has revealed images showing what it calls a concept design of its 2026 Formula 1 car.

The car manufacturer will take over the Sauber team for its debut in F1 next season.

Its ‘R26 Concept’ shows how its car could look under the new technical regulations F1 will introduce next year. Audi said the design reflects the manufacturer’s “recently introduced design philosophy.”

Audi AG CEO Juergen Rittersberger said the manufacturer is keen to take advantage of the opportunity to promote itself to potential buyers which F1 offers.

“Formula 1 is more than just motorsport, it’s entertainment, emotion, technology – and also a challenge,” he said. “But it is precisely this combination that takes us where we want to go: inspiring new customer groups for Audi.”

“With the enormous reach of Formula 1, we have the opportunity to attract new customers for our brand – especially in the younger target group, where Formula 1 is experiencing rapid growth.”

Audi has never previously competed in F1 before. Rittersberger highlighted the budget cap, introduced in 2021, was a key factor in drawing it in for the first time.

“Thanks to the cost cap, Formula 1 is also more financially sustainable than ever before. When we look at the development of sponsorship opportunities, team evaluations, and the overall revenue potential in Formula 1, one thing becomes clear: This path makes perfect sense for Audi – also economically.”

The manufacturer announced its plans to enter F1 three years ago. Its first F1 car is due to run for the first time in the series’ private pre-season test at the Circuit de Catalunya beginning on January 26th.

Audi CEO Gernot Doellner said it intends to become a championship contender within five years. “We are not entering Formula 1 just to be there,” he said. “We want to win.

“At the same time, we know that you don’t become a top team in Formula 1 overnight. It takes time, perseverance and tireless questioning of the status quo. By 2030, we want to fight for the world championship title.”
