Boxing star to host ‘Christy’ movie screenings at Manlius Cinema

A boxing star is coming to Central New York to host multiple screenings of her new movie.
Christy Martin will host showings of the new biopic, “Christy,” starring Sydney Sweeney, at the Manlius Cinema on Friday, Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 15, at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. She will introduce the film and participate in a post-show discussion about her career.
Tickets are on sale for $15 via manliuscinema.com. A VIP meet-and-greet package is available for $50 for both 7:30 p.m. screenings, as well as photo and autograph opportunities.
A portion of the proceeds from tickets and VIP purchases will benefit Christy’s Champs and Vera House, Inc.
“Christy” stars Sweeney as Martin, who was the first big breakout star of women’s boxing in the 1990s. She fought in a Mike Tyson undercard and appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated. A Netflix documentary, “Deal With the Devil,” and Martin’s autobiography, “Fighting for Survival,” detailed the abuse she suffered outside the ring at the hands of her then-husband and manager Jim Martin, who was convicted of attempted murder after stabbing and shooting her in 2010.
Christy Martin won her last boxing championship in Syracuse in 2009 and was part of the first female class inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020. Martin returned to Canastota for the Boxing Hall of Fame’s Parade of Champions in June with Sweeney.

“Christy” underperformed at the box office with $1.3 million in its debut weekend, but Sweeney has still earned awards buzz with her performance. The Emmy-nominated actress is also known for roles in “Euphoria,” “The White Lotus,” “Anyone But You,” and American High’s “Big Time Adolescence,” shot in Syracuse with Pete Davidson.
The cast of “Christy” also includes Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, and Ethan Embry.
