BOSTON — The Memphis Grizzlies announced that a sore right ankle will sideline star point guard Ja Morant on Wednesday night against the Boston Celtics.
Morant hurt his ankle during Tuesday’s 133-120 loss to the New York Knicks, according to Grizzlies coach Tuomas Iisalo. Despite the injury, Morant played 34 minutes while collecting 16 points, 10 assists and eight turnovers.
“He was injured last night in the game,” Iisalo said. “He kept playing through it, though.”
Though Morant has expressed frustration with his situation in Memphis, Iisalo said it has been “great” to coach the 26-year-old.
“We have had a lot of dialogue,” Iisalo said. “We see the game in very similar ways. He’s a very intelligent player. He sees things on video; you don’t even have to point it out, he already knows what could have been an option there. And overall, it’s just been a pleasure.”
Added Iisalo, “I think both Ja and I are very competitive people, and we are both after the same thing, which is winning.”
