Heavy police presence at University of Utah dormitory after ‘swatting’ incident

SALT LAKE CITY — A heavy police presence responded to a University of Utah dormitory on Wednesday evening after receiving a ‘swatting’ hoax call of an alleged stabbing.

University Police received notice from the Salt Lake City Police Department at 7:31 p.m. about a call of a stabbing that was placed through a non-emergency line.

The suspect caller, whose identity was not confirmed, claimed to have stabbed his girlfriend at Kahlert Village, and added if officers did not respond to the scene within 20 minutes, that he would shoot up the school.

A shelter-in-place order for students was issued as police began conducting sweeps throughout the dorm and escorting students out.

Following a floor by floor search of Kahlert Village, officers found “no victim or credible threat,” according to university officials.

The university said the incident was similar to two other swatting incidents reported at U.S. universities this week, and consider it to be a serious crime.

“These incidents cause panic and draw police resources away from legitimate calls for service,” school officials warned.

The campus and dormitory are now considered safe and there is no threat. No one was injured, and no arrests have been made.
