Rory McIlroy shares take on meeting $200M-worth sports icon during his visit to India for the DP World India Championship

Rory McIlroy became the first golfer in history to bring the Masters green coat to India, as he competed in the DP World India Championship. The Northern Irish golfer not only competed in the competition, but also enjoyed a great Diwali celebration, one of the country’s biggest festivals. During Diwali night, McIlroy made a media appearance with arguably the greatest cricketer of all time, Sachin Tendulkar.

The DP World India Championship was recently declared to return for the 2026 season as DP World extended its sponsorship of the tour. Due to this, one of Rory McIlroy’s interviews has made headlines where he stated that the tournament was a treat for him, with particularly excellent hospitality. The golfer also stated that the Diwali party with Sachin Tendulkar was the highlight of his week in India.

According to Khel Now, McIlroy stated,

“I enjoyed it, I had a great time in India. I don’t know if I have one lasting memory. I guess I’ll remember not hitting driver for four days. But the hospitality, the welcome, the generosity of the people there, it was absolutely amazing. I would say the Diwali party on the Friday night and being able to spend some time with Sachin Tendulkar, that was a pretty big highlight.”

Rory McIlroy finished tied for 26th in the DP World India Championship with a total score of 11 under par. He was able to maintain his form throughout the competition, shooting rounds of 69, 69, 68, and 71. Tommy Fleetwood, on the other side, emerged as the tournament’s eventual winner, finishing with a score of 22 under par.

Apart from all these things, the DP World Tour recently named an award after McIlroy.

Rory McIlroy is the sixth golfer in history to achieve a career grand slam (winning all four majors). The Northern Irishman has also had a successful DP World Tour career, finishing first in the Race to Dubai rankings six times. To honor McIlroy’s contribution, the DP World Tour established the Rory McIlroy Award, which will be granted to a European Tour golfer who performs well in all four majors every year.

During the DP World Tour Championship press conference, McIlroy stated that the award might become something that every youth strives for. He stated:

“But the more I thought about it, and the more I’m not going to be around forever playing, so it’ll still be amazing to have my name, after my playing days, my name associated with this tour, and hopefully have an award named after me that means something to future generations that they want to strive towards to achieve.”

Rory McIlroy is currently set to compete in the DP World Tour Championship, which will be held at Jumeirah Golf Estates’ Earth Course.
