Kings booed off home court as homestand ends with blowout loss to Hawks

The Kings were booed off their home floor Wednesday as a five-game homestand ended with another embarrassing loss.

Jalen Johnson had 24 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists to lead the Atlanta Hawks to a 133-100 victory over the Kings at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.

Eight players scored in double figures for the Hawks (7-5). Onyeka Okongwu had 21 points, Zaccharie Risacher had 15 and Nickeil Alexander-Walker added 14.

Keon Ellis came off the bench to score 20 points for the Kings (3-9), who won the first game of the homestand before losing the last four by an average of 26.8 points.

Domantas Sabonis had 12 points and five rebounds. DeMar DeRozan was held to four points on 1-of-6 shooting.

“We’re going to find people who want to compete, period,” Kings coach Doug Christie said. “You’ve got to look in the mirror. We’re going to show each individual film, and if that’s your compete level, that’s unacceptable, period.

“We’ve got to compete. … When you play a team like that, you’ve got to compete, period, and if you don’t, that will be the damn result every single time.”

Halftime report

Christie deployed his 10th different starting lineup in 12 games after Zach LaVine (right thigh contusion) and Malik Monk (left ankle soreness) were ruled out due to injuries. Christie started Dennis Schroder and Russell Westbrook in the backcourt with DeRozan, Precious Achiuwa and Sabonis in the frontcourt.

Atlanta outscored Sacramento 21-8 over the first five minutes. The Hawks went 8 of 13 from the field to start the game while the Kings went 4 of 10. The Hawks led by as many as 15 before the Kings staged a pair of 9-2 runs to cut the deficit to three on a basket by Westbrook with 0.2 seconds to play in the opening period.

The Hawks reestablished a double-digit lead after outscoring the Kings 10-3 to start the second quarter. Fans responded with a chorus of boos as Atlanta’s lead swelled to 16 after the Kings committed three turnovers in a span of 51 seconds.

The Hawks led 66-46 at the halftime break. They shot 55.6% from the field while making 9 of 20 (.450) from 3-point range. The Kings shot just 39.1% while going 6 of 21 (.286) from beyond the arc.

The second quarter was especially hard for Kings fans to watch. Sacramento went 4 of 22 (.182) from the field and 2 of 14 (.143) from 3-point range with eight turnovers.

Second-half summary

Christie pulled all five starters after the Kings were outscored 7-1 to start the second half, replacing them with Ellis, Devin Carter, Nique Clifford, Daeqwon Plowden and Maxime Raynaud.

That didn’t work either. The Hawks went up 85-52 on a dunk by Risacher and led 105-68 at the end of the third quarter. The Kings trailed by as many as 44 in the fourth.

Up next

The Kings will begin a difficult five-game road trip when they visit the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday at Target Center in Minneapolis.

The Kings will face the Timberwolves for the second time this week after suffering a 144-117 loss to Minnesota on Sunday in Sacramento.

The Timberwolves (7-4) have won three in a row and five of their last six after beating the Utah Jazz 120-113 on Monday behind a 35-point game from Anthony Edwards. They will be well rested with three days off before the Kings come to town.
