Australia’s Opposition Ditches Net Zero as PM Woos UN on Climate

Australia’s main opposition Liberal Party dropped a commitment to hit net zero emissions by 2050, potentially complicating Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s efforts to win support to host a flagship global climate summit.
Legislators within the center-right party, which suffered a heavy defeat in May elections to Albanese’s Labor Party, also agreed a policy to scrap a legally-binding target to cut emissions by 43% of 2005 levels by 2030 if returned to power. The Liberal Party has been out of office since 2022.
