Major UK motorway closed in one direction after four-car crash

A MAJOR road has been closed after a horror crash involving four vehicles.

The A1(M) in South Yorkshire is shut southbound between J37 (Doncaster) and J36 (Warmsworth) following the collision.

The crash – between J37 in Doncaster and J36 in Warmsworth – has triggered a spillage of oil and lots of debris across the carriageway, National Highways have said.

The incident has been marked as “severe” by National Highways, which warned of congestion while it’s dealt with.

And the debris left behind after the smash needs to be cleared before motorists can access the stretch of road again. 

Drivers have been warned to expect delays, said National Highways.

Emergency services are in attendance and recovery work is currently ongoing at the scene.

Delays have been ongoing since around 9am this morning, according to reports.

And the southbound lane between J37 and J36 is set to remain closed for several hours.

Motorists have been told to check their route and allow extra time before travelling.

South Yorkshire emergency services are still working at the scene with commuters brought to a standstill.

National Highways said that traffic caught within the closure is in the process of being released passed the scene.

Drivers have been advised to take an alternative route with the road expected to remain closed for hours.

Normal traffic conditions are expected to resume between 12pm and 12.15pm, National Highways said. 

However, this timeframe is subject to change, but the collision is also expected to be cleared by this time.

Road users are advised to follow the Solid Circle diversion symbol on road signs, it said.

Diversion Route

The diversion route is as follows:

  • Exit the A1M J37.
  • At the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto the A635 and proceed along this road for approximately 1 mile to the junction with the A638.
  • At the junction, turn right onto A638 and proceed along this road for approximately 1 mile to the roundabout with the A19.
  • At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto A19 and proceed along this road for approximately 700m to the roundabout with the A630.
  • At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto the A630 and proceed along this road for approximately 2 miles to the junction with the A1M J36.
  • At the roundabout, take the 1st exit to re-join A1 at J36.
