N.Y. Post columnist and hockey writer Larry Brooks, who spent 38 years at the publication over “two separate tenures,” died Thursday morning at age 75 “after a brief battle with cancer.” Brooks received the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award from the Hockey HOF in 2018 (N.Y. POST, 11/13).
Here is a sampling of the reactions to Brooks’ death on social media:
- Newsday columnist Neil Best: “Larry Brooks was a giant of American hockey writing, as tough and fearless as anyone I have known in the business.”
- Newark Star-Ledger columnist Steve Politi: “To watch him work a locker room at a morning skate or practice was to see how it was supposed to be done. RIP.”
- ESPN play-by-play voice Bob Wischusen: “Such sad news….no one in NYC history covered the NHL like Larry…he’ll be sorely missed…every good thought and prayer to his family.”
- MSG Networks play-by-play voice Don La Greca: “He was a fixture for me at the Garden for 20 years, 20 years before that as a fan. Massive loss for the sport of hockey and journalism in general. RIP.”
