Ex-Chelsea star Oscar facing retirement after being rushed to hospital with heart issue

Former Chelsea star Oscar is said to be considering retirement after he fell unconscious during a training session at Sao Paulo with a hospital picking up a heart abnormality

Oscar is back in his homeland with Sao Paulo, but a heart issue has emerged following tests

Oscar, the former Chelsea midfielder, could be forced to retire after falling unconscious during a training session due to cardiac issues, according to reports from his native Brazil.

Oscar last featured for Sao Paulo in August when they played Corinthians, where he suffered a fractured vertebrae after just 20 minutes. He has made the bench just twice since. The 34-year-old is understood to have been taken ill whilst using an exercise bike during a training session on Tuesday and was rushed to hospital.

It’s claimed that Oscar has been monitoring a heart issue for months after he showed signs of an abnormality during tests for the fracture. Global Esporte state that the hospital questioned Sao Paulo on this at the time, but the midfielder was allegedly deemed fit enough to continue playing.

In a statement on Tuesday, the club said Oscar “presented an incident with cardiological changes” and was “promptly attended to by the club’s professionals and the medical team from Einstein Hospital Israelita”.

They added: “The player was then taken to the hospital, where he is currently in stable condition and remains under observation for further tests to clarify the diagnosis. As per standard procedure and respecting the player’s privacy, further information will be released as soon as there is an update from the medical team, in agreement with Oscar.”

Oscar moved back to Brazil when he signed a three year deal with Sao Paulo, the club he played at before he got his move to Chelsea in 2012. He made the move in December last year, and expressed his excitement at coming ‘home’ to the club where it all began.

The midfielder moved to Stamford Bridge following their Champions League success and won the title under Jose Mourinho three years later.

He would eventually leave west London when he made a shock £60million move to Shanghai Port in 2016. His move was criticised by then Blues boss Antonio Conte during a time when the Chinese Super League were spending huge sums on big name players.

Oscar spent a hefty period with Shanghai Port, winning the CSL title three times whilst also lifting the Chinese FA Cup and Super Cup. He was reportedly being paid £400,000-a-week at the time. The Brazilian scored 77 goals and added 141 assists in 248 appearances for the club.
