Spain including Canary Islands hit with amber weather warnings

Areas of Spain have been placed under weather warnings by Spanish weather agency, Aemet. Storm Claudia, the second named storm of the season is expected to impact weather across the country.

Storm Claudia will cause rainfall in a large part of the country. The rain will spread across the Iberian Peninsula until reaching the east of the Spanish mainland. The amber warning for rain is in the Costa, Andévalo and Condado areas of Huelva province, from 12pm until 12am, where accumulated rainfall of up to 30mm in one hour is expected.

Yellow weather warnings are also in place today for areas including Aragon, Principado de Asturias, Illes Balears, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Cataluña, Extremadura, Galicia, Comunidad de Madrid, Comunidad Foral de Navarra, País Vasco and La Rioja.

Weather alerts for the Canary Islands are also active today, November 13. Gran Canaria is under an amber alert for rain and yellow alerts for wind and storms. Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma and Tenerife also have amber alerts for rain and yellow for wind and storms.

According to Aemet, the cold front associated with Storm Claudia will sweep from west to east, bringing heavy and persistent rainfall. Authorities are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to take precautions if driving.

During thunderstorms, officials warn against approaching areas struck by lightning or seeking shelter under isolated trees. As Claudia moves eastward, conditions are expected to gradually improve by Thursday evening, authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely.

According to Aemet, on Thursday, 13 November, the most active front will primarily affect the eastern province, although the rest of the islands will still experience the storm’s final effects, including showers and wind, which are expected to weaken throughout the day.

The warnings come less than a month after emergency alerts were sent directly to mobile phones across parts of Spain on Tuesday night, October 29, warning locals of “extreme danger” and advising them to remain cautious.

The Andalusian government confirmed the activation of Operation Level 1 of the Flood Risk Plan (PERI) after Aemet, Spain’s national meteorological agency, placed the area under a red alert, up to 120mm of rain is expected to fall in just 12 hours.

Andalusian Minister for the Presidency and Emergencies, Antonio Sanz, posted to X last month: “We have raised the Emergency Plan for Flood Risk in Andalusia to operational level 1. “Red alert activated for the #Huelva coast. Torrential rains are expected in the area. Avoid travel and follow the advice of @E112Andalucia.”

The Foreign Office says extreme weather can affect many areas of Spain, particularly over the summer months. Follow the Spanish Meteorological Office (AEMET) and European Meteorological Services for severe weather warnings.
