This DU Graduate Is Now A Front Runner In Bihar Elections

Maithali is now one of the few notable alumni from ARSD College, Delhi University.
Maithili Thakur, a 25-year-old born in Benipatti, Madhubani district, Bihar, is one of the few notable alumni from Delhi University’s Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma (ARSD) College. Born on July 25, 2000, Maithali is now one of the front runners in the Bihar Assembly Elections, the results of which are scheduled to be announced on November 14.
Thakur has been in headlines recently as she entered politics to contest the 2025 Bihar Legislative Assembly election from the Alinagar assembly constituency as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Educational qualifications
Since Maithali was born in a small village of Bihar, her early schooling was done in a local school based in Bihar’s Madhubani district. After a few years, once Maithali’s family recognised her singing talent, her family shifted to Delhi where Maithali could have better opportunities.
In Delhi, she was enrolled in Bal Bhavan International School, which is CBSE affiliated. The school is situated in Sector 12 of Dwarka, New Delhi. Maithali completed her schooling from this Delhi-based school that was founded in 1970.
After completing her high school, Maithali got admitted in University of Delhi’s Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College (ARSD College). Earlier known as Sanatan Dharma College, this co-educational constituent college of Delhi University (DU) was founded on August 3, 1959, by the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha, Delhi. This South Campus DU college was ranked 7th among colleges in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2025, and 5th in 2024.
Other notable alumni from ARSD, Delhi University are Ramakant Goswami, minister in Delhi government; Jaspreet Jasz, singer; Rajkummar Rao, actor; and Sudhir Chaudhary, Senior Editor DD News.
Music career
Maithili was born to a Maithil musician and music teacher working in Delhi, Ramesh Thakur and Bharti Thakur. Maithili, along with her two brothers, Rishav and Ayachi, was trained by her grandfather and father in Maithili folk and Hindustani classical music, harmonium and tabla.
Once her father moved the family to Delhi for better opportunities for Maithali, she was given proper training in Delhi. At the age of 10, she started singing at jagrans and other musical functions. Following this, in 2011, Thakur reportedly appeared in Little Champs, i.e. a singing competition television series. She was then again seen in Indian Idol Junior. She won the “I Genius Young Singing Star” competition in 2016, following which she launched her album, Ya Rabba. She also appeared in season 1 of Rising Star.
After finding great success with their videos on Facebook and YouTube, Thakur and her brothers started performing at national and international events. Maithili received the Atal Mithila Samman from the Government of India. In 2019, the Election Commission appointed Maithili and her brothers as brand ambassadors for Madhubani.
She then began her YouTube channel with her brothers, which brought her recognition and several awards such as National Creators Award and NHRCCB India Pride Award.
Political career
On October 14, 2025, Thakur joined the BJP and got Ticket from Alinagar Assembly constituency. The results for the assembly elections will be announced on November 14, 2025 (Friday). According to the exit poll, Maithili Thakur is losing the election against RJD’s Vinod Mishra.
