Heavy rain causes flash floods in West Midlands

Majid Mahmood, The Birmingham city councillor responsible for transport, urged people not to drive or walk through flooded areas, where he said “the water can be far deeper and faster moving than it appears”.
He said the authority was working to manage flooding and clear blocked drains and suggested people contact their local councillor to tell them about flooding issues.
Bruce Lines, a city councillor for the Bartley Green area, said the flooding had caused “gridlock” there four or five times in the past 12 months.
He said the area had seen an “exceptional amount of rain” in the past 24 hours and ground water had risen, with a particular problem around Adams Hill.
“The drainage system here doesn’t appear to be sufficient and we need to get this resolved,” he said.
