Bavuma embracing world champion status ahead of India series

South Africa Test captain Temba Bavuma believes his side have a “great opportunity” to stamp their authority as World Test champions during their upcoming series against India.

The Proteas won the World Test Championship for the first time earlier this year, defeating Australia in the final at Lord’s, and they have since beaten Zimbabwe twice while drawing a two-match series with Pakistan.

South Africa will take on India in two Tests this month, with the first getting underway on Friday in Kolkata before the two sides face off in Guwahati, starting on November 22.

Although Bavuma insisted “not much” could come close to winning the World Test crown, he believes beating India on foreign soil would be second to that.

“Whenever we go into a series, there’s a lot more of an expectation for us as a team to uphold the world champion status,” Bavuma said.

“From a confidence point of view, it’s a case of us kind of walking proudly with that badge, being known as the champions.

“We have a lovely opportunity now coming up against India in their own conditions. It’s a great opportunity for us to kind of stamp ourselves with that label.”

The Proteas’ five-wicket win against Australia ended a 27-year drought for a major trophy, and Bavuma feels the triumph has changed public perceptions of the team.

“I feel like there’s been a major shift in mindset towards the Proteas and towards cricket,” he added.

“There’s been a lot more appreciation and love that’s been shown towards the team, but also to individuals within the team.

“For myself, probably a lot more, appreciation for my presence within the team.”
