SEOUL, Nov. 14 (Korea Bizwire) — OpenAI will begin piloting a new “group chat” feature for ChatGPT in South Korea, allowing multiple users to collaborate with the AI simultaneously within a single conversation window, the company announced Friday.
The feature, which is also being tested in Japan, New Zealand and Taiwan, represents one of the company’s first major moves beyond individualized AI assistance toward social and collaborative use cases.
With group chat, up to 20 participants can be invited into a shared conversation to plan trips, brainstorm ideas, compare options or coordinate projects, while ChatGPT provides suggestions, schedules, checklists and other AI-generated support. Users can add participants through a profile-icon button in any new or existing chat, and anyone can join via an invitation link.
To summon the AI within a group conversation, participants simply mention “ChatGPT.” The interface also includes new social features such as emoji reactions and the option to generate profile photos for participants.
OpenAI emphasized that personal chat data will remain separate from group interactions, and memory used in one-on-one conversations will not be shared with others. Additional safeguards will limit exposure to sensitive content for users under 18, and parents or guardians can disable the group chat function through parental controls.
Kim Kyung-hoon, OpenAI’s Korea country manager, said the feature is designed to help people “develop ideas, make decisions and pursue creative projects together,” calling it a first step toward transforming ChatGPT into a shared collaborative space.
He added that feedback from early pilot countries, including South Korea, will guide future improvements as the feature evolves.
