Rishabh Pant almost predicted Temba Bavuma’s dismissal during the first Test of the two-match series between India and South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday.
India’s wicket-keeper, who returned to the side after his foot fracture during the fourth Test against England at Manchester in July, alerted the fielders as Kuldeep Yadav claimed the South Africa skipper’s wicket.

Kuldeep tossed it up from over the wicket, full and on middle, as Temba did not quite get to the pitch of the ball and failed to smother the spin. He defended it with hard hands, and the ball drops on him before spinning slightly to catch the inside edge. The ball went low to backward short leg, where Dhruv Jurel stayed low to grab it around his knee.
As the Indian fielders ran up to congratulate Kuldeep, Jurel was quick to acknowledge Pant’s keen eye in the build-up to the wicket.
Watch:
At Lunch, India’s pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets as South Africa reached 105/3. Bumrah (2/9) dismissed openers Ryan Rickelton (23) and Aiden Markram (31) after South Africa had a solid start, reaching 57 for no loss at one stage after choosing to bat first.
Under Gautam Gambhir’s strategic leadership, India made a bold selection decision by fielding four spinners for the first time since the 2012 Nagpur Test against England. They recalled Patel, replacing the designated No. 3, Sai Sudharsan, who was seen training separately with physio Adrian Le Roux in the morning.
South Africa opted for only two spinners, leaving out Senuran Muthusamy, who was the Player of the Series in their 1-1 draw in Pakistan. Kagiso Rabada’s rib injury resulted in Marco Jansen and Mumbai Indians pacer Corbin Bosch forming their two-man pace attack.
