Dame Mary Berry has opened up about her husband’s declining health, while discussing her own remarkable journey to 90. The cherished television chef marked the milestone age back in March with a family celebration in her hometown Bath.

While those who are lucky enough to reach this significant age are usually retired, Mary has no plans to slow down and is determined to continue her career for as long as possible.

Discussing her age, the former Great British Bake Off judge said she felt “so lucky” to still be in good health.

She also spoke warmly about her husband of nearly 60 years, Paul Hunnings, though acknowledged his health struggles.

In an interview with Yours Magazine, Mary revealed: “He’s terribly frail, but very cherished and well looked after.

“Just as I was leaving, I gave him a little plate of smoked salmon, a wedge of lemon, and I cut the crusts off the bread. And though he doesn’t have a drink with it, I’ll do the drinking when I get in.”

Discussing her lifestyle, the television star described herself as “very much a morning person” who likes to spend time outdoors.

Regarding her diet, she maintains careful eating habits and steers clear of snacking between meals.

Following in her mother’s footsteps, who reached 105, she additionally prioritises regular walking to stay active.

“My husband is always in the biscuit tin, we’ve been married 59 years and I’ve still got no control whatsoever! I eat what I enjoy, but I eat very carefully,” she laughed.

When previously asked how she maintains her figure while sampling cakes on The Great British Bake Off, she told The Belfast Telegraph: “It’s quite simple – I just make sure the next meal is small.

“I don’t believe in cutting out certain foods; a little of everything is good for you. There’s nothing wrong with a slice of cake with tea, which I enjoy most afternoons, or strawberries with a big dollop of cream – just don’t be dipping into the biscuit tin all day. Moderation is key.”

In a recent conversation with Woman and Home, Mary said it continues to be “a great pleasure” looking after her 93-year-old husband.

“That’s what I promised to do – for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer. And we are very happy in our dotage,” she recalled of her vows.

Mary and Paul had three children together, their eldest son William, who sadly lost his life in a car crash in 1989 aged 19, their younger son Thomas, and daughter Annabel, who is now involved in Mary’s brand and family recipes.
