Dame Mary Berry has made a rare revelation about her husband’s health, while discussing her own lifestyle at 90. The chef marked the milestone in March with a large family gathering in her hometown of Bath.

While it may seem like the ideal time for Mary to retire, she insists she has no intention of slowing down and hopes to continue working as long as she can.

Reflecting on her age, the former judge of The Great British Bake Off said she feels “so lucky” to be in good health.

She went on to express gratitude for still having her husband of nearly 60 years, Paul Hunnings, by her side, though acknowledged that he isn’t as fortunate health-wise.

Speaking to Yours Magazine, Mary revealed: “He’s terribly frail, but very cherished and well looked after.

“Just as I was leaving, I gave him a little plate of smoked salmon, a wedge of lemon, and I cut the crusts off the bread. And though he doesn’t have a drink with it, I’ll do the drinking when I get in.”

Discussing her lifestyle, the chef described herself as “very much a morning person” who enjoys getting outdoors.

When it comes to food, she’s also mindful about what she eats and avoids snacking between meals.

Like her mother, who lived until 105, she additionally likes to keep fit by walking regularly.

“My husband is always in the biscuit tin, we’ve been married 59 years and I’ve still got no control whatsoever! I eat what I enjoy, but I eat very carefully,” she added.

When previously questioned about how she keeps her figure while tasting cakes on The Great British Bake Off, she revealed to The Belfast Telegraph: “It’s quite simple – I just make sure the next meal is small.

“I don’t believe in cutting out certain foods; a little of everything is good for you.

“There’s nothing wrong with a slice of cake with tea, which I enjoy most afternoons, or strawberries with a big dollop of cream – just don’t be dipping into the biscuit tin all day. Moderation is key.”

In a recent interview with Woman and Home, Mary expressed that it remains “a great pleasure” to look after her 93-year-old husband.

“That’s what I promised to do – for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer. And we are very happy in our dotage,” she recalled of her vows.

Mary and Paul have three children; their son William, who tragically died in a car accident in 1989 at the age of 19, followed by their younger son Thomas and daughter Annabel, who now plays an active role in Mary’s brand and family recipes.
