The All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is putting up one of its strongest performances in Bihar’s Seemanchal region in the 2025 Assembly elections. AIMIM’s Push to Expand Beyond Its Core Base
After being excluded from the INDIA bloc, party president Asaduddin Owaisi sharpened AIMIM’s focus on Bihar, announcing plans to contest 100 seats. However, the party officially fielded 25 candidates, including two non-Muslims, an effort to broaden its appeal beyond its traditional voter base in Seemanchal. In 2020, AIMIM surprised political observers by winning five seats in the region. But four MLAs later defected to the RJD, leaving only Akhtarul Iman from Amour in the party.
His current lead reinforces AIMIM’s ability to retain influence in its core belt.
Why Seemanchal Matters: The Region’s Electoral Weight
Seemanchal, comprising Araria, Katihar, Kishanganj and Purnea, is home to 24 Assembly constituencies and a high concentration of Bihar’s Muslim population. For AIMIM, this belt has long been a launchpad for deeper political expansion in the state.
The 2025 trends indicate that the party has managed to maintain relevance despite organisational setbacks and defections.
NDA Dominates Statewide as AIMIM Holds Its Ground in Seemanchal
While AIMIM performs strongly in its pockets, the bigger statewide picture shows the NDA cruising towards a landslide victory. Trends indicate the alliance crossing the 200-seat mark, with the BJP leading in 91 seats and the JD(U) ahead in 79.
Other NDA partners also show solid numbers:
- LJP (RV): 22 seats
- Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM): 4 seats
- HAMS: 4 seats
Meanwhile, the Mahagathbandhan appears headed for its worst-ever performance, with leads in just 36 seats.
What This Means for AIMIM Going Forward
AIMIM’s strong showing in Seemanchal highlights its resilience and ability to reclaim lost ground, especially after defections weakened its legislative presence.
The party’s strategy of expanding its candidate profile, combined with a focused appeal to regional voters, seems to be yielding results, at least in the areas it considers politically vital.
As counting continues, AIMIM’s performance in these six constituencies will remain a key storyline in the broader narrative of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.
