Ex-Rangers and Leeds United striker Kemar Roofe joins Walsall on short-term deal

The 32-year-old, who had been without a club since departing Derby County in May, has penned a contract, initially until January.
Injury put paid to his short-lived stay at Pride Park earlier this year, where he played just 100 minutes across his three cameos from the bench.
Walsall-born Roofe had been training with his hometown club for the past three weeks in an attempt to earn a deal with the League Two leaders, after a challenging two years plagued by injury.
“It’s my hometown club so it means that little bit more to me and I feel even more at home now having built relationships at the training ground,” Roofe said.
“The staff and players have been amazing with me and I just can’t wait to get stuck in and help the team and the club achieve its goals.
“My football journey probably started at Walsall l when I was five – I’ve got pictures of me at the Bescot Stadium doing the penalty shoot-out at half-time.
“So to be able to remember that moment and kind of do a full circle is amazing. Hopefully I’ll be able to do what I did back then and score some goals for the Saddlers.
“I spoke with the gaffer at length and he’s given me lots of confidence – he’s told me to bring what I usually do with my quality and experience and help the team push forward.
“I’m excited to see what the future brings and I just can’t wait to get started.”

He scored 38 times in 102 appearances for Scottish giants Rangers – lifting the league title, two domestic cups and finishing runners-up in the Europa League in 2022.
Prior to Rangers, Roofe scored 33 goals in 123 games for Leeds, where he played under the iconic Argentine manager Marcelo Bielsa.
His career started at West Brom, but he was unable to break into the first team, after loan spells at Vikingur Reykjavik, Northampton Town, Cheltenham Town, Colchester United and finally Oxford United.
He joined the latter permanently in 2015 and plundered 26 goals in 48 games to help lead them to automatic promotion into League One.
As a result, Roofe was named League Two Player of the Season and voted into the division’s PFA Team of the Year for 2015-16.
In addition, Roofe netted seven times in 16 matches for Anderlecht in in 2019-20, and has been capped five times by Jamaica, scoring once.
