Germany looks to take one step closer to another FIFA World Cup appearance, as the nation gets set for a matchup with lowly Luxembourg on Friday.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to be the biggest in the event’s history, with more countries competing for ultimate glory than ever before. That means qualifying is more important than ever before. While the powerhouse nations are always favorites to move on to the World Cup, there is always the chance for the smaller nations to pull off a stunner.
In next year’s World Cup, 16 countries under the UEFA banner will be eligible to compete in the tournament.
Germany’s path to the 2026 World Cup is not quite as cleanly paved as I’m sure some supporters would like to see. A loss to Slovakia in the team’s first qualifying match in September really shook things up across the board. However, the Germans have reeled off three straight wins, including squeaking out a 1-0 victory over Northern Ireland last month.
Germany will have to face Slovakia on Monday, which will most likely determine who goes straight to the World Cup.
They take on a Luxembourg team that is already eliminated for WC contention, having lost its four matches thus far.
