Wayne County man thought ‘scanner was broken’ but actually won $230K Michigan Lottery prize

WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. – A Wayne County man initially thought the scanner was broken when he checked his lottery ticket, but he discovered that he actually won a $230,740 jackpot from the Michigan Lottery.
Walter Lawson Jr., 58, of New Boston, matched the Fantasy 5 numbers, 10-20-23-24-39, in the drawing on Oct. 31, 2025, to win the jackpot, according to Michigan Lottery officials.
“I always check my tickets at the lucky spot scanner, and when I scanned this ticket, I thought the scanner was broken because of the message that came up,” Lawson said. “I read the message to the cashier, and she told me they had sold a big jackpot winner, so maybe it was me.”
Lawson checked the winning numbers and said he was “thrilled” to find out he won the jackpot.
“I play Fantasy 5 every day, and it definitely paid off,” Lawson said.
Lawson purchased his winning ticket at Aaa Petroleum Inc., at 29450 Sibley Road in Romulus.
Lawson plans to complete home improvements, pay off his daughter’s student loans and then save the rest of his prize money.
Fantasy 5 plays are $1 each and drawings are held each night at 7:29 p.m.
