Reynolds’ wacky theory behind Team 18’s turn of speed

THERE is never a dull moment with David Reynolds.

For example, when it comes to his explanation of a strong showing today at the Sandown 500 for Team 18.

Anton De Pasquale was fastest in Practice 1 with Reynolds third. Those positions were inversed for the second and final half-hour Supercars session of the day.

“Normally that’s one of the hardest things to do, is to make the car better… we did that today and we profited,” said the #20 Camaro driver.

“I put it down to me and Anton just diving really hard into the conspiracies the last few weeks.

“We’ve consumed so much rubbish that it has just fried our brains and we’re just so stupid we go so fast now.”

From there, the end-of-practice press conference got increasingly sidetracked, to the amusement of all.

Next on Reynolds’ agenda was an alternate universe in which Supercars’ new finals series had existed all along.

“Apparently in an alternate universe if they had that same structure over the last 15 years I’ve been racing, I would have won it once or twice or something,” he said.

“So, alternate universe two-time champion.”

It was about this point that Chaz Mostert, who was second in both sessions, chimed in.

“I feel quite smarter about myself,” he grinned.

De Pasquale seconded Reynolds’ version of events: “Like Dave said, we’ve been preparing a bit different than we did for Gold Coast, diving into another side of the internet.”

Reynolds declined to divulge further information about said conspiracies out of fear of being wiped “off the face of the planet” and describing it overall as “eye-opening”.

“I’ve probably warped his brain more so than I had in previous years of being teammates, so I actually feel sorry for him,” Reynolds said of De Pasquale, who he previously worked with at Erebus Motorsport (2018-20).

“But we did have a good day today, so maybe that’s how it goes.

“I was sitting off the apron this morning in P1 going, I’ve done no onboard camera work or anything like that, I was so underprepared and it’s been the best practice day of the year.”

Supercars action resumes tomorrow with qualifying from 11:50am AEDT.
